The ecological significance of odonates is that they are indicators of fresh water bodies. They are of two types - dragonflies, the bigger ones, and damselflies, the slender ones.

The life of odonates revolve around ponds, streams, rivulets where there is fresh water. Odonates were in plenty during earlier times, including in my area, but now they are seen lesser, may be due to water pollution.

Dragonflies prey on other insects, like mosquitoes, so they are also effective in controlling pests.
